#2  WE NEED YOU!  ADVOCACY DAY AT THE LEGISLATIVE BUILDING IS JUNE 13

Please go ahead and mark your calendars for the Advocacy Day at the Legislative Building on Wednesday, June 13 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.  You do not have to be there for the entire block of time, but any time you can spend with us down at the Legislature between those hours will help!  We will be sending more details in the coming weeks.

#3  SENATE BILL 1541 ON DIX PROPERTY COMES TO FLOOR

The NC Senate introduced Senate Bill 1541 this week, which is identical to House Bill 1644, so that both could make crossover.  Both bills are broad enough to allow the General Assembly the opportunity to embrace and even enact our park plan.

#7  RECAP OF DIX PARK ROUNDTABLE

The Greater Raleigh Merchants Association presented a public roundtable about the future of the Dix property this past Monday, May 21 at the City Council Chambers.

Speakers were:  Gregory Poole, president of Dix Visionaries; Jay Spain, president of FDDP; Bill Padgett, representative of DIX306; Mitchell Silver, planning director of the city of Raleigh; and John Tote, executive director of the Mental Health Association of N.C.

The information presented by the three groups supporting the park (FDDP, Dix Visionaries and DIX306) was very well received.  Some notable quotes:

"The use of this property will reflect for centuries to come our values, our hearts--our compassion.  This is all about doing something for children--It's all about families." – Mr. Gregory Poole

“Just recently the NC General Assembly negotiated to buy Chimney Rock as a state park for 24 million dollars.  It was the right thing to do.  I don't live there.  I don't have to live there to appreciate our state saving a natural resource for the public.  The General Assembly does not have to buy the 306 acres at Dix.  It will cost them nothing.  It is already state land.  With the stroke of a pen, they can create a 306 acre Dix Park for the people of our state and all who visit.”  – Mr. Jay Spain

A question from the audience started off with a reference to the Healing Place and asking why not including this and other services “in the park.”  Response from Bill Padgett: “Everyone wants to be “in the park” – DHHS, mental health services, Wake Tech, Charter schools, condos, strip malls, office park, etc. – these are all good things but if you start putting these things “in the park” – the park is greatly diminished and soon gone. It’s the future generations we want in the park – visitors and tourists, young and old, rich and poor, all races and cultures. We want them to relax, play and enjoy the park – not live, work and shop in it.”
