Winter grassland at Dix Park

Event Details

Celebrate the winter solstice with Dix Park 2025 Artist in Residence, Preston Montague, with an exciting retrospective of his ecological installation artwork.

Preston will be joined by author, conservationist, and citizen of the Tuscarora Nation, David Rahahę́·tih Webb, for a moving presentation on his new book, Indigenous Carolinians, a sweeping look at Indigenous peoples living where the Mid-Atlantic meets the Southeast.

Following David’s presentation, Preston will dive into his work in developing grassland ecosystems as living, didactic land art, exploring the process of creating large-scale landscapes from seed, the native plants that compose the grasslands, and the emotional experiences his work aspires to evoke.

The first 30 attendees will receive a free Venus flytrap—one of North Carolina’s most iconic native plants—courtesy of the inimitable Plant Delights Nursery, founded by globally renowned horticulturist Tony Avent. Additionally, Preston will provide all attendees with a free sample of seeds of native plants used during his residency, along with instructions on how to grow them successfully in the garden.

You won't want to miss this exciting finale to Dix Park's first artist-in-residence program!
